The Trump phenomenon's most telling and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president began displaying the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to international aid is 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have risked – really, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with the government.
We went from 'the humble will receive the world' into 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As bewildering as it is to witness the leader seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, however it is still unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your outer garment you must offer them your pullover as well.
The evident and direct fact that Christ from scripture calls for a form of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a controversial faith: appealing to the masses, but because of its inherent radicalness requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Highest Within Us
So I have been heartened to see the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the best parts within national heritage.
